ADA – Age Demand Action 2008 South Africa

October 6, 2008

We wish to congratulate all the members that were able to have their ADA days in the past week, for us it was not possible because there were other developments around older people that were happening country wide. We are busy finalising preparations for ours on the 8th October and we are very exited.

We are so treatened by the rainy weather this week.

We have drawn our memorundum which will be handed over to the Speaker from the Ethekwini (Durban) municipality and we will have a reprresentative from the Dept of Justice to give a speech on Elder Abuse and educate older people on what to do if such happens.

older persons and HIV/AIDS

I am Thembekile Hlubi,I work for Muthande society for the aged. The organisation is based in Durban in the KZN Province in South Africa. Our work involve a lot of different programmes including HIV/AIDS and older people. We give them information about the disease, train them on how to better care, prevent and limit infections.

We have trained older people to be peer educators and counsellors and we’ve found that this is the best practise because it is much better to get new information from your peers. In addition to caring the organisation  does a lot developmental work i.e Skills development and skills transfer, Literacy training which is ABET driven, creating awareness on alzheimers, capacity building on different health, rights and social security  programmes.
